Spain 2016
Tempranillo is the most widely planted red variety in Spain and we graciously took it upon ourselves to do the the excruciating, tiring work of tasting through tons of not-so-great wines to find an awesome one that we are confident you’ll love. Tempranillo in it’s youth can be aggressive with the tannins & pretty acidic which means it usually needs some time in the bottle to mellow out. This little nugget already has 8 years under its belt so the works been done, and on top of that, this particular wine falls in the category of truly affordable. An astounding value!!!

This wine is aged 24 months in American oak barrels, 12 more months in the bottle, and then held in their cellar for at least 5 years before release so…….it’s perfect to drink now!

As with most great Spanish Tempranillo based wines, there are hints of ripe red berries with smooth, rounded balsamic notes and traces of smoky, toasted oak. This wine also showcases a well-structured and velvety mouth-feel all the while exhibiting powerful and rounded tannins. Pair with red meats such as a grilled T-bone steak, or on the vegetarian side, Moroccan chickpea stew. One could also be perfectly content with a well-aged Manchego and Marcona almonds while sipping this hidden gem.
(Had a bottle the other day with a brisket burger and made the mistake of bringing home just one bottle)

The 800-hectare Dehesa La Granja is a massive farm comprising of olive trees, garbanzo bushes, cereal crops, rolling hills planted with 25-year-old Tempranillo vines and hundreds of heads of sheep and cattle. Inspired by the great terroir of Zamora, plus the three-century old subterranean cave system found excavated underneath the farm, this location has the perfect combination of an above-ground climate and soil for grape growing, along with a perfect underground climate and temperature for wine aging.

Castilla y León, in northern Spain borders both Galicia & Portugal has a continental climate, extremely dry summer climate, very cold winters but because of the high number of daylight hours it gives rise to exceptional quality grapes.
