The quiet, cold days of January allow for a bit of reflection. When we started talking about opening our own wine store over 7 years ago a common discussion was how to set ourselves apart from the average “packie” with mediocre wines and discounted schnapps. We wanted to tell the stories of the wines and producers we loved. We wanted to champion the grower with dirt under their nails and a passion to coax the best possible grape juice from their vineyards. The corporate winery conglomerates are more interested in profit and loss statements and bottom lines not the tradition and culture that these wines so richly represent. Given the current volatile status of the world, we thought that we need to double down on supporting the independent producer. From our wines, craft local beers and spirits to local eggs from Fern Farmstead(nudge, nudge Keith) we are committed now more than ever, knowing where and who our favorite foods and beverages come from.

And speaking of which, let’s get to the meat and potatoes of this email, shall we?

The Valpane Estate in Monferrato has been producing award winning wines since 1898 Pietro Arditi is the third generation stewarding this property and he continues the way his ancestors did farming small plots of mostly Barbera without and pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers; preferring to let the grapes stress to produce the most intense flavorful wines possible.

Piedmont is most famous for the long lived wines from Barolo and Barbaresco made from the elegant perfumed grape Nebbiolo. While that may be the most famous and expensive wine produced in the region Barbera is the most widely planted and consumed. The wine to drink everyday while you wait for your expensive wines to mature. At Cantine Valpane they focus on Barbera from the hills of Monferatto and to put it mildly, they know what the hell they’re doing . These are table wines meant for the dinner table but they are far from simple. We tasted this wine a few weeks ago and were blown away by the complexity of flavors offered. The current release is 2017 vintage so bottle development is evident with notes of forest floor and a smoother mouthfeel balanced with bright cherry and blackberry notes. Truly a complete package of a wine that is perfect with dinner now but will hold in the wine rack if you forget a few bottles.
